Five Easy PiecesFive Easy Pieces (1970)

IMDB rating: 7.50

Plot: Bobby Eroica Dupea (Jack Nicholson) comes from a well-bred family of musicians, and once showed great promise as a concert pianist. By nature a restless, angry individual, Bobby left his family and his music when he could no longer endure the dull, cloistered routine of daily practice. He took to the road, wanting to “see the world,” and hopefully find something or someone to quell his inner turmoil. He has settled in a small town as an oil rigger, where his life consists of going to work, arguing with his dimwitted but loving girlfriend Rayette (Karen Black), and bowling every night with his friend Elton (Billy “Green” Bush). Not surprisingly, this routine begins to disgust Bobby and, fed up, he decides to travel to Puget Sound, Washington to pay his family a visit. Leaving Rayette at a nearby motel, Bobby goes home and is reunited with his family.

Which decade produced the best films?
With the decade coming to a close, let’s look back at film history and see if we can’t determine which era produced the finest films. I’ve listed a few greats from each era, but obviously there are others to consider, so I apologize in advance if your favorite is not listed.

30’s: All Quiet On the Western Front, Dracula, Frankenstein, Mutiny On the Bounty, Modern Times, Gone With the Wind, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, The Wizard of Oz.

40’s: His Girl Friday, Citizen Kane, The Maltese Falcon, Sergeant York, Casablanca, The Pride of the Yankees, Arsenic and Old Lace, Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

50’s: A Streetcar Named Desire, The Quiet Man, Rear Window, On the Waterfront, Seven Samurai, Rebel Without a Cause, The Ten Commandments, The Seventh Seal, 12 Angry Men, North by Northwest

60’s: Psycho, The Time Machine, The Hustler, Cape Fear, Dr. Strangelove, The Good the Bad and the Ugly, Cool Hand Luke, 2001: A Space Odyssey, True Grit, Easy Rider.

70’s: Five Easy Pieces, MASH, Patton, The Godfather 1 & 2, The Exorcist, Blazing Saddles, Dog Day Afternoon, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Taxi Driver, Star Wars, Apocalypse Now

80’s: Raging Bull, The Empire Strikes Back, The Shining, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Blade Runner, Scarface, Amadeus, Full Metal Jacket, The Untouchables, Midnight Run, Rain Man, Dead Poets Society

90’s: Goodfellas, Silence of the Lambs, Reservoir Dogs, Unforgiven, Schindler’s List, Pulp Fiction, Shawshank Redemption, Braveheart, Leaving Las Vegas, The Usual Suspects, As Good As It Gets, American History X, Saving Private Ryan, Fight Club

00’s: O Brother Where Art Thou, Lord of the Rings trilogy, Training Day, Gangs of New York, Million Dollar Baby, Cinderella Man, The Last King of Scotland, No Country For Old Men, There Will Be Blood, The Wrestler.
My vote goes for the 70s.

You pose a very good and interesting question. The answer is very subversive. Everyone will have there own favorite decade for films they love. It could be said that each decade had there own great films. But I would have to agree with you that the 70’s had the best films. Although this past decade has been very good as well.

Every decade produces 25-30 must see movies(well, maybe not this decade). The 60’s beats out the 70’s narrowly, IMO. BTW, in almost every decade, the best movies are released in the first five years.
